Sara Jane Moore, having served more than 30 years in federal prison, was paroled Monday.  On September 22, 1975, Moore arrived at the St. Francis hotel in San Francisco.   President Ford was giving a speech to a large crowd when Moore fired her nickel-plated .38 caliber, missing President Ford by several feet from only 40 feet away.   A bystander then subdued her and she was taken into custody by police.

In a recent interview with Moore, she describes her political ideology at the time as “radical” and claimed “I had blinders on”.  When asked what the motive was, she believed that the assassination of Gerald Ford would prompt a revolution.

She went on to say that she now views the incident as a “terrible mistake” and is “glad that she did not succeed” in killing Ford.   She is currently living under an assumed name in the eastern portion of the United States.

Mike Tyson’s four year old daughter accidental death

Phoenix, Arizona -  Police report that boxer Mike Tyson’s 4-year-old daughter died from injuries she sustained in an apparent household accident.

Exodus Tyson died Tuesday at a Phoenix hospital, one day after she was found with a rope or cord around her neck, according to a police spokesman.

From the Phoenix Police Department:

“I was just advised by investigators that Exodus Tyson was pronounced deceased at 11:45 AM today at the hospital. Our sympathies go out to the family.”

Sig Rogich, a family friend and former agent of Tyson spoke about the incident.   He called the accident a “tragic, tragic thing.” and he went on to say ”Mike was very dedicated to that baby,” I think every parent’s greatest fear is that they live beyond their children. I know Mike has had his troubles in his life, but he’s always been a good father.”

Exodus was reportedly playing near a treadmill in the home’s activity room.  She somehow became entangled in a “rope” or “cord” that was hanging from the equipment.  When police arrived, they found the girl’s mother had removed the cord and was administering cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR).  Police are treating the case as an accident.

Tyson was was not in Phoenix at the time of the incident but immediately returned when he became aware of the situation.

Police said they think the girl’s 7-year-old brother was watching television and her mother was busy cleaning in another room when the incident happened.

Statistically, a child dying from accidental strangulation is a very rare occurrence.  In 2006, fewer than 1,000 children died from strangulations across the country.

Many common household items such as clothing, ribbons, necklaces, pacifiers’ strings, drapery cords and even window blinds can be hazardous to a child.  If a young child becomes entangled, sometimes they panic and they get trapped even tighter as a result of their struggles.

The Tyson family has released this statement -

“There are no words to describe the tragic loss of our beloved Exodus. We ask you now to please respect our need at this very difficult time for privacy to grieve and try to help each other heal.”

Obama Nominates Sonia Sotomayor to Supreme Court

President Barack Obama appointed federal appeals judge Sonia Sotomayor for the Supreme Court today.  She may become the first judge of Hispanic ethnicity to wear the robe of justice.  The vacancy was created by retiring Justice David Souter.

In order to become Supreme Court judge, Sonya Sotomayor, 54, will first have to be confirmed by the senate.  Her nomination is expected to be confirmed by the Democratic controlled senate.

Sotomayor is said to have more years of juducial experience than any judge currently serving.

Obama said in a public statement that he wanted “a justice who combined intellect and empathy — the ability to understand the troubles of everyday Americans.”

Sotomayor grew up in a Bronx housing project when her parents moved to New York from Puerto Rico.   She has wanted to be a judge since the age of 9.

Sotomayor attended Princeton and then went on to Yale Law School.   Her professional career started when she became  a New York assistant district attorney.  Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan later recommended her as a district court nominee to George Bush Sr.

Sotomayor’s nomination does not come with praise from everyone, however.  Some former court clerks and prosecutors voiced concerns about her enforcement of technical legal details.

In 2001 a colleague of Judge Sotomayor, Ralph Winter, included a strange footnote in a case suggesting that an earlier ruling by Sotomayor had “inadvertently misstated the law in a way that misled litigants”.

Sotomayor’s most controversial ruling came as a result of Ricci v. DeStefano, the case involving affirmative action in the New Haven fire department.  This case is now up for review by the Supreme Court.

Tomb of the Unknowns

Monday, May 25th, 2009 - President Barack Obama pays homage to our fallen comrades in Arlington, VA.  In observance of Memorial day, Obama prepared a short speech.

Our fighting men and women - and the military families who love them - embody what is best in America. And we have a responsibility to serve all of them as well as they serve all of us,” he said. “Yet, all too often in recent years and decades, we, as a nation, have failed to live up to that responsibility. We have failed to give them the support they need or pay them the respect they deserve. That is a betrayal of the sacred trust that America has with all who wear - and all who have worn - the proud uniform of our country.

The Tomb of the Unknowns is one of Arlington cemetery’s most popular tourist sites and is located near the center of the cemetery,

The monument houses the remains of unknown American soldiers from World War I,  World War II, the Korean Conflict and (until 1998) the Vietnam War.  Obama is an avid supporter of American War veterans.   His statements this memorial day seem to hint at how American vets  were treated and viewed after the Vietnam War.

Mary-Louise Parker Makes a Splash

May 19th, 2009 1 Comment   Posted in Celebrities

Weeds star Mary-Louise Parker made a splash recently when pictures of her topless in a bathtub began to circulate online. They were taken from an episode of the popular Showtime series in which the director wanted the nudity for artistic reasons, to show the character as being vulnerable. Parker wasn’t comfortable with the revealing shot, but filmed it anyway.

“I fought with the director about it, and now I am bitter. I knew it was going to be on the Internet: ‘Mary Louise shows off her big nipples.’ I wish I hadn’t done that. I was goaded into it,” Parker told MORE magazine in an interview for the June issue.

The director considers the scene one of the five best Parker has done with the series and stands by the decision, and while Parker isn’t pleased with this new publicity, she has no plans to quit the show, which starts its fifth season June 8, 2009.
